Hugh Ryan, founder of the Pop-Up Museum, on queer history.
This past spring the Pop-Up Museum of Queer History, working conjointly with the Kinsey Institute and GLBT Student Support Services, popped up at Indiana University Bloomington. I took the students I was working with, who were enamored of the blow-ups of queer pulp covers, the collaborative mapping of queer communes in the U.S., the various oral histories one could put headphones on and absorb. It’s a fabulous project, one that’s site-specific (in both geographical and affective ways), collaborative, community-building, and so much fun. The folks behind the Pop-Up Museum are raising funds right now, through indiegogo, for their upcoming (big deal!) event at the Leslie+Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. Donate!
